Vertical White Bars on boot

Just installed Ubuntu on a new machine and I get vertical white bars on boot and when closing down. Can this be sorted?

Have you tried installing proprietary drivers for your graphics card?:

System--->Administration--->Hardware Drivers

[aSystemOverload]

Just after install it came up with a prompt advising they were available, it downloaded and activated them.
