I was looking at the new black mac, not as fast as my current desktop 64bit EM64T dual core processor ,,,,,supposedly the laptop is also dual core 64bit.

I clocked safari browser page rendering at about 2.9 seconds kinda slow for dual core 64bit

I asked about setting up linux OS and I was told that it would not void the warranty since the warranty is primarily on the hardware, BUT they do not sell a separate insurance to cover if you break the screen.

Fujitsu at least offers a no questions asked policy where they will replace the screen if you buy the policy.

This laptop will be for my wife.

I know that Ubuntu works 100% with Fujitsu notebooks, no special tweaking involved with the exception of enabling the pen tablet but my wife isn't interested in a tablet just a notebook.

My friend has a Fujitsu T series convertible and Ubuntu Dapper works like a dream.

So my dilemma is Mac, Fujitsu or other ? most important to my wife is weight under 4 lbs preferably and speed is also an issue dual-core 64bit would be best.

any suggestions?

really? I point blanked asked the salesman if it was 64bit, he said yes. I really don't like the atmosphere at apple so I guess this answers my question about apple. NO APPLE!

So what would be the best laptop Fujitsu? or something else?

also which is best AMD or Intel or something else?

No worries not buying the MAC, the coating is some kind of non-skid rubberized coating I have seen this type of surface on pens and eyeglasses.

no, dont buy it. for under 4 pounds, you have

Fujitsu- nice lcds, nice laptops overall
Thinkpad- great linux compatibility, durable
Asus- more stylish than the other two, linux should work fine

personally i would go with a thinkpad x60 http://www-131.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?storeId=10000001&catalogId=-840&langId=-1&categoryId=2072542

it costs a pretty penny though.

Linux is Cool ! I was just talking with my wife and she insist on only using Ubuntu, I have decided it's because Linux is Cool, kinda of anti-establishment Matrix like cool.

...but seriously she likes Ubuntu alot! the Gazelle that your friend makes looks sweet!

funny my wifes' name: Leah in Gaelic means Gazelle.

...but she really wants it under 4lbs, she is still in School and has to lug around 50lbs+ of books on her back so any extra weight isn't cool for her back.

We're looking serouisly at two Fujitsu notebooks primarily:

P7000D or S2000

I love the MacBook. In fact, it will be my next computer. Top of the line... but color white to save some money (its sad that they expect people to pay a premium for a black one). However, it does not meet your below-4 pounds requirement. It weighs in at 5.2 pounds.

Edit: Sorry, I just read that you already took the MacBook out of the possible choices

if you want dual-core and 64bit in a portable laptop then right now you're going to have to go with one of the new turion processors. I'm pretty sure they already came out and are available now, though I'm not sure in which notebooks.

If you just want to install Linux on it, don't bother. A regular PC laptop will suit you better, and will be a bit cheaper. But OS X is a pretty good Unix-based system that's very nice for newbies and doesn't have Windows XP's problems. It's not quite as fun to play around with, but if it's not for you but for your wife, it might be a good choice.

I owned two old school iMacs and both screens died within 2 years of intensive use.
I still have monitors of 10 years old laying around which still work (sort of) fine.
I have been using a Mac sinds 1998 (my first computer) but I am not going to buy an iMac again. My trust in Apple products is not what it used to be anymore.
Also a Mac has little advantages over a normal pc nowadays, except some great software like Final Cut Pro.

Thanks, but she has used Macs at school and dislikes them. I'm thinking Fujitsu is the way to go.

just FYI, unless you are seriously doing something hardcore on these, dual core will not improve your performance whatsoever. dont believe all the performace crap apple has on their website, its all ********.

Also, ill throw in a recomendation for the dell latitude D620, 4.3ish pounds and a 14" widescreen, dual core with a fullsized keyboard. better buy than the fujitsu i think. And dont worry about the build quality, dells latitude line is great. the only sacrifice i think youll be making is that fujitsu has some of the best screens out there while the dell isnt as good(but certianly not bad)

I would have to disagree with you on this. I currently have a dual-core Intel EM64T(not apple) desktop and the difference is remarkable.

It is like comparing dial-up to DSL, believe me once you go dual-core 64 bit you will never go back.

I make my decision through experience.

an example on page rendering in web browsers on a 32bit non-dual core average about 19 seconds on the dual-core 64bit that time is about 1.9 seconds.

one very simplistic example of performance, there is much more.

I'm gonna be the Intel fanboy in this thread...

(1) Why is 64-bit such a motivating factor in this purchase? It's a laptop, right? Are you planning on putting in more than 4GB of RAM? If not, what is 64-bit good for? The "additional registers" typically don't do much good unless you have programs specifically optimized to take advantage of them (UGS NX4 comes to mind...)... But as already mentioned, the Merom/Conroe (Core 2 Duo) will support 64-bit mode.

(2) The Intel Core Duo chip is a very nice chip, and if you're buying a laptop today you should definitely keep this option on the top of your list. I am absolutely impressed by Intel (which is a first for me in over 5 years) and the amazing improvement they've made over the previous generation chips.

But as far as Mac and Ubuntu... please do your research carefully. I've yet to see many concrete reports about success/failure.

well, if you really want dual core then the d620 is your best bet.
