I have looked for hours on this forums and the internet. When i boot up from usb running 11.04 it boots up nicely until I get to the screen where it shows the Ubuntu sybol and the 5 loading dots. i can move my mouse around and my screen will go black every like 5-7 secs and sometime will just go black. alt-f1 dose not work. I am just trying to run live from usb and i am using windows xp. I have checked my checksum and i have re-downloaded it like 10 times. I am using the universal USB installer. Maby it might be my hardware but this dose this on several computer i have tried on. i am new to all of this. thanks!

Welcome to the forums. :)

I suppose that you have downloaded the iso image file ubuntu-11.04-desktop-i386.iso. Try to check its md5sum (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuHashes). It should be 8b1085bed498b82ef1485ef19074c281. If you have problem in order to calculate the md5sum of a file in XP, I recommend the HashTab tool ( http://implbits.com/HashTab.aspx ).

Once you have verified that your iso image is good, try to create your Ubuntu Live USB using the tool UNetbootin:

http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/

Best regards,

Luis

With a computer that old the BIOS does not support the USB or being able to boot it.

Well i have my usb live to work on several other xp machines (a really old machine and a semi new) and has work on those machine real well. All i can think of is that my hardware wont work with ubuntu. Will ATI video, MSI motherboards, and AMD processors work with ubuntu?

Found a other problem on the old machine running xp. After ubuntu fully boots up the machine will freeze and all you see is the wallpaper. If i had a window open it will flicker every 4-5 secs.

It sounds like a video issue to me. Try referring to the first 3 posts in this sticky thread for troubleshooting and resolution. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1743535
