View Full Version : [ubuntu] How to navigate between applications & documents? (without umteen clicks)

I'm using Ubuntu 11.04, with its launcher and attempt to rethink navigation. No matter how pretty the launcher is... it is still one or two steps backwards when it comes to multitasking that require someone to jump between documents and applications, back and forth. With simple tabs (e.g. at the bottom as in Windows) any other document or application is only one click away + it provide complete overview of things.

In my new and shiny Ubuntu on the other hand, things are less satisfying. If I for example have Evolution open, with the main window, another window for an open email and a third one for the reply I'm writing plus two spreadsheets, then navigating between them is a nightmare. Every time I go from one Evolution window to another I need to click the Evolution launcher icon to get all three windows displayed in front of me and then click again on the window I want to go to. That's 2 clicks instead of 1 (though it feels more because it is so incredibly awkward). If I instead want to move from Evolution to one of my spreadsheets, then I click the launcher icon to go to Calc, but it will switch straight to one of them, meaning that if it is the wrong one then I need to click the launcher icon again and then select the correct spreadsheet. That is 3 clicks instead of 1! (and again, it being so annoying that it feels even more than three clicks).

I truly hope that there is some sort of clever way of producing tabs or magically solve this annoyance, and that this post is simply a result of me not having realised something obvious, because otherwise I may not last long with Ubuntu... Which would be a shame as I really like everything else about it (not the new "Application menu" of course, which is almost as bad)

Thanks, but I was already aware of those things, i.e. keyboard shortcuts. They do however fail when it comes to both problems:

1. They still require 2-3 actions or so to get to desired document
2. There is no visibility, i.e. I do not see which documents I have opened

I can't think of any other solution to this problem than tabs. What is wrong with tabs? Why on earth did they drop those?

What I really would need is for some clever person to write some clever code that would display tabs somewhere on the screen that would enable quick navigation and overview. Maybe wishful thinking... but it would be great to have.
