Hello

I am going to start learning java, but i need to know... what packages do i need to compile for java?

I would suggest upgrading to dapper (it is very stable now and will be the new stable in a week) since official Sun java packages are now available in the multiverse repositories. Then it is as simple as

sudo apt-get install sun-java5-jdk


I would also suggest installing eclipse, which is a very nice IDE for Java.

A suggestion :- for the first few months dont even dream of an IDE .. then move on to eclipse / netbeans ;)
