http://aaron-kelley.net/blog/2011/04/grub-prompt-after-upgrade-to-ubuntu-11-04/

have been tried along with an hour or more of manual CL commands Any ideas please?

Clearly no; there is only a Grub command prompt that after many attempts resulted in no success. At this time, I have used another computer to burn an ISO and I am installing 11.04 ext4 next to the failed ext3 (Grubless) OS - all to be cleaned up later... I was gonna over write the bad copy; I changed my mind at the last minute... My HD has room to spare

Good, a clean install is the better way to upgrade anyway. Good Luck

See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2#Editing%20the%20GRUB%202%20Menu%20During%20B oot section 8.4.

Your 11.04 install is probably just fine. You have to reinstall Grub to the MBR. You can do this from ubuntu after manually booting it or you can use a live CD to reinstall it. There's no need to completely reinstall ubuntu.

More detail will help diagnose it: run this http://bootinfoscript.sourceforge.net/ and post the RESULTS.txt.
Once you have installed your second, vanilla 11.04, you should see a Grub menu on boot that lists your first 11.04 (if not, run sudo update-grub and reboot). See if it boots when you select it and then check your grub version and if it's ok you can, optionally, update and reinstall to MBR and then abandon the vanilla install.

Since I installed a new 11.04 alongside the original downloaded, I would like to go in a new direction. After I recover what I want from the 10.10 (defunct 11.04 now) I'd like to clean install from the ISO over the bad version and delete the new one I'm running now.
