External Database connection in drupal

First and foremost, I have already posted this question in drupal forum but ubuntu forums is definitely the best forum. So here is the question:

I am new to drupal. I am using drupal 7. Drupal has its own database and I have my own. I would like to display the contents from my database in my drupal site and allow users to comment on them. I have googled a lot. But I am searching for a really simple, step-wise tutorial on how to do it, with explanations of each step.

So you want to change the database Drupal uses? There should be something in the Drupal config files to do that.
