Hi Ubuntu Sisters and Brothers:

As of the last post () in the forms in mid July (in the year 2011 of our Lord), the outlook seemed pretty dim for streaming Netflix on Ubuntu.

:(

Well, I found another non-forum thread (http://www.iheartubuntu.com/2011/05/netflix-coming-soon-to-ubuntu.html#comments (http://www.iheartubuntu.com/2011/05/netflix-coming-soon-to-ubuntu.html#comments)) that suggests that as of May 11, 2011, Netflix is coming soon to Ubuntu.

According to that thread, Google developers had been working on providing support through Chrome/Chromium since February, 2011.

DOES ANYONE KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT FURTHER DEVELOPMENTS ABOUT THIS???

:)

Many thanks!

Well, just google for the answers. Really, how would we know more than your google efforts? :D

Anyway, the issue is due to Netflix use of Silverlight which is a Microsoft product. Whether Google does it through chrome/chromium would rely on them getting Microsoft to give out the DRM info they use. And we all no how cooperative M$ is to the open source world...

There are methods though, see: http://how-to.wikia.com/wiki/How_to_watch_Netflix_%28Watch_Instantly%29_in_Linu x

the easy way is to purchase an hd tv with netflix.

i guess this would be for folks with myth tv xbmc setups.

tv sets are mostly where this content ultimately ends up.

i managed just getting a tv with it, i needed a new one anyway, the old one consumed too much energy compared to the newer LED models.

I don't really count that as a method because of this:
This how to works around this problem in a very non-ideal way. It relies on running Windows in Linux.

True enough, but, the OP seemed to want some way to do it, and though not ideal, it was a possibility.

As for me, I just got a Roku box...cheap and works like a charm. Or, as suggested, just get a TV with it built in.

Netflix is now viewable through ChromeOS (which is linux based), now we just need a linux port to Chromium in Ubuntu.

If chromeOS is already able to stream movies from Netflix, isn't that stored in the kernel? So don't we just need to install and use whatever kernel ChromeOS is using?

I'm sure Google worked out some kind of licensing deal with Netflix for the DRM to work in ChromeOS. I wouldn't expect to see it working in desktop Linux any time soon.

If it's about Silverlight, won't Moonlight work as a drop-in replacement?

No, it won't.

No it wont because of the DRM that is used within the Silverlight stream. If there was no DRM on the stream, it would. Just another reason for me to dislike DRM.
