We are not in August yet. August will begin tomorrow, on Monday. You should have waited another day.

In his timezone, it may already be August.

As for my desktop, its sorta boring as always. 10.04 with all default. I'll update this post when things get more interesting.

Not quite, I enabled unstable and experimental and installed gnome-shell. I had a couple of boot warnings afterwards but I did a couple of workarounds, those are solved. I wanted gnome-tweak-tool and the "User Theme" shell extension so I installed them from Launchpad. I had an error where the shell network manager applet wasn't working, I upgraded network-manager-gnome from unstable and, after a couple of scary reboots where I had no network connection, it started working. YMMV.

Impressive feat. I actually wiped my Fedora partition, since the ATI drivers are still not working. Don't think I'm gonna be trying Gnome Shell at least until next year.

Openbox
Fbpanel
Pytyle
Nodoka Midnight Theme (my favorite dark theme)

Left screen is my simple clean screen; right screen is my busy info screen- creates a balance I like. The screenshot where the windows look perfectly organized demonstrates pytyle- on-demand per-workspace or global tiling for Openbox. I will never use a tiling WM or floating WM again- I must have both ;) Including links (imageshack) to the right screen (clean) and the right screen dirty- you can see enough of my left screen as its pretty simple anyways.. By the way, my system name is geekdom, in case youre wondering why I added the dom on the right screen wallpaper.

Aw, and I was feeling cool just for moving up to 2.6.39 rc4. (Which was entirely out of necessity, as 2.6.38 wanted to kill my computer.)

Toz, I'm liking the 2D / "grunge" desktop style now, so I'll ask; could we have a link to that wallpaper?

Interestingly enough, I had to move back to 2.6.38 from 2.6.39- there is a bug in the intel audio driver that causes one to sound like a chipmunk when using a microphone (skype). 2.6.38 has been great..

For me, it was hit or miss- sometimes I sounded that way, sometimes I didnt. Ubuntu may have patched this problem if there is a patch available; I experienced this issue on Arch and downgraded to 2.6.38 :)

Nice task bar, how to get it dark and transparent? Cool Wallpaper also, it's from the default set but that set certainly has some nice walls.

Mine for now:
- Kubuntu with KDE 4.7 and mainly the default settings. Only changes: clocks on desktop, icon for Kickoff and of course the Wallpaper.

You know.. I have to say I'm a bit surprised.
This Unity-Gnome3 mess made me want to take a break from everything, but I figured I might as well try KDE before ditching hope all together, and man was I surprised.

KDE is provides such a great experience now compared to how it was when 4 was released, and I must say so far I'm loving it. It "just works".

KDE is provides such a great experience now compared to how it was when 4 was released, and I must say so far I'm loving it. It "just works".

+1. I'm surprised anyone still uses Gnome.

Yeah, I think I read somewhere that before KDE4, KDE was the most popular DE but after the 4 fiasco people jumped ship to Gnome (I kinda remember this as I switched too back then) and that's when the "Gnome popularity" rose. But now thanks to Gnome 3 / Unity people are now jumping ships again and to much surprise, they really are impressed by KDE (since they've been doing their thing to polish KDE a lot since the 4 transition).

Anyway, here's my Win7 setup.

Arch Linux running on an Asus 1001P

http://ompldr.org/tOXFmeQ (http://ompldr.org/vOXFmeQ)

I don't think I'll ever replace my two aging desktops the way the economy is. By the way I am officially and respectfully leaving Ubuntu once 10.4 falls out of support because of Gnome 3.0. It makes more since to me to do a minimal install and install just one GUI then to install KDE on top of, or remove, Gnome 3.0

Debian and Arch all the way here

Just a has-been. Haven't had anything new in months.

Thanks, I usually like your setups as well I think. I think remember seeing a screen shot of of yours a while back based on your avatar lol. I normally model my Arch installs after minimalists desktops like yours and others but I alway end up with unnecessary eye candy. I am gonna look into ScrotWM and try and leave compiz for my main Arch system (Asus A8N-E). Its just running Arch+plain Openbox now cause I haven't had the time to configure it.

It is really up to you to decide. I personally like Fedora because the KDE it uses is vanilla (close to upstream). However there is also Kubuntu, openSUSE, Arch, Gentoo, Mandriva/Mageia, Debian, etc... that you can run KDE on. If you wanted a distro which has a good KDE implementation out of the box then openSUSE would be my choice.

Distressed tee shirts. No special significance to the Apple logo; I just liked the backdrop.

Edit: I've developed a new love for the default Zoom minimize animation, perhaps because it seems smoother in the new Compiz, and I love that windows explode when closed from Scale. Pop them like bubbles. Gorgeous.

There are quite a few good things about Fedora. Like Delta updates (Yum Presto). Unfortunatly though Fedora 15 doesn't currently have KDE 4.7 so you are stuck on 4.6.5 until it either becomes an official update or it goes into the kde-unstable repo (which should be soon hopefully).

@Rasa, np. There's no rush, I probably won't try gnome-shell again till it moves out of Debian experimental. But that is one badass mofo theming job. And no, I'll need to check out that album, STAT!

@Kexolino, I successfully compiled it when I first tried it over a year ago, but I was on sidux at the time. Since I've moved to squeeze I just use the deb file, it installs no problem for me using either Gdebi or dpkg...
http://sourceforge.net/projects/talika/files/talika-0.50/

As to the other question, no, I'm using Compiz and Emerald. The Emerald theme I based off of one in the old emerald-themes package, which I could only find in the Ubuntu archives (and I'm glad I saved the link for it, I can't even find it with a Google search anymore)...
http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/e/emerald-themes/emerald-themes_0.2.1-0ubuntu1_all.deb

You can do something very similar with Xfwm by using Totem or Biz from the xfwm4-themes package, available in both Ubuntu and Debian. You can even do customizations, but it's a PITA... it's like 30 xpm files that you have to edit in GIMP, whereas emerald-theme-manager is all just menus, sliders and color-pickers. The thing with Emerald though is shadow rendering can be very wonky, for instance I've seen the top shadow render fine but half way down the sides the shadow cuts off and the rest of it is very faint. But Compiz/Emerald lets you customize the shadow color/opacity, radius and offset while Xfwm's shadows are just there. Compiz's shadow rendering/window matching is pretty damn wonky on its own, but after struggling for a long time with it I finally got a shadow to render under Xfce4-notifyd. STOKED!

Thanks! I can't even remove the the shadows from Xfwm :lolflag: I fiddled with it and tried to find a solution, but in the end I gave up and posted a thread just now... Though I can see that Compiz doesn't use too much memory either, so maybe I should just go with it.

Sorry, not the case. Openbox isn't a compositing WM, so you have to use xcompmgr, xcompmgr-dana or cairo-compmgr. I've had/seen issues reported with all 3.

Simple: newer does not necessarily mean better. YMMV, but I'm more satisfied with Mint 9 than subsequent versions of Mint, and even more so than the Ubuntu versions they were based on. Generally speaking, the LTS (long term support) releases are more stable than the other ones.

The reason why I have the Hardy Human (geh. that's hard to say) theme set is that the first Ubuntu version that I really used was Hardy. The exact same reason why I prefer Windows XP over 7. It's hard to teach an old dog new tricks. (Although, I'm only 15, but still ... )

I was, because I was thinking it would be less work than Openbox... But then that compositing thing happened, and there seems to be no solution. I realized that setting up Openbox doesn't take longer than XFCE to me anyways.. Then again, I'm not doing anything special.

No , I have visited the site though . The core packages in the repository work well enough to give E17 a try. I have a mix of Gnome and E17 applications. It's hard to find themes that work on Ubuntu , but I like the default theme . I have been experimenting with the color change and settings options. Like any new environment , it's a matter of figuring out where all the settings are and how to use them .

sudo apt-get install ttf-inconsolata

and use that font in your conky. I believe it will look even better.

thank you I have been looking for fonts for conky
I just tried that font and it solved a lot of problems I had with font colors!!!! Freemono was causing some strange colored fonts on this laptop. They were more like rainbow colored fonts, using bold help it a little. But your font works perfect.

got bored and made this glass logo with gimp

There was a major batch of updates from backports yesterday. Now every bug Audacious had is fixed, and the rest of the stuff was libraries. Debian stable is the best.

Mine for August:
The best distro i ever had was #! 10 Openbox, but i wanted to test XFCE 4.8, so i chose to install Debian testing XFCE - netinstall, and its working like a charm, no problems what so ever!
But some part of me misses openbox

When I decide to update my desktop (which will be soon) I think I'm gonna install Debian Stable. I'll keep Arch running on my laptop.

You really should try again statler seems to be very stable.
The only problem I have is learning to configure it.

You're an Openbox user, right? Check out #!, it's got a pretty awesome openbox configuration from the get-go.

Yip but only on the laptop, I'm happy to run a full DE on my desktop. I will probably go the cruchbang route and add xfce to it I reckon.

Squeeze and Crunchbang, by extension, are using XFCE 4.6. 4.8 is in Wheezy. Just a heads-up.

I tried that ppa and I got a missing package error  I am running 64x and I don't know if that is /was the problem . I really enjoy experimenting with e17 but I'm not ready to install Bodi Linux yet . :) I hope it will be available for the next Ubuntu release .
