Just out of curiosity.
Based on my understanding, the GPL requires a copy of the license to be given with any binary copy of a GPL'd program. Since Ubuntu ships with tons of GPL'd binaries, where are the copy of the licenses for each program stored?

It is all the same licence. It is not specific to each program. The 'G' in gpl stands for general, meaning it is a general (public) licence.

man gpl
