Hey there, I'm a noob. I've played around with Ubuntu before, but never gotten serious with it. This is my first attempt at getting it to run as a descent alternative to Windows. Unfortunately... IT DOESN'T WORK!! I've tried both the 32 and 64 bit versions, receiving the same problems with each.

My problem is as follows: I can't get anything to show but the background when I log in. Unless I use low graphics mode. It's rather annoying and I've yet to see the Unity system. I've been hunting on google for quite a while and still haven't found any fixes. I have a Dell m5010 with an AMD p320 proc and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250/HD 550v graphics.

Thanks,
~ XK

You probably need to install the proprietary ATI drivers for Unity to work correctly. Since this cannot be done during the normal installation process, you have to do it afterwards with the Additional Drivers tool.
If you don't like to install non-open source, you can choose another flavour of Ubuntu, for example Kubuntu, Xubuntu or Lubuntu.
