Gphoto2 is the command-line client for the cross-platform digital camera library that is libgphoto2. Gphoto2 can do some pretty amazing things and supports a great many cameras presently on the market including the majority of Canon and Nikon DSLRs.
I found-out about Gphoto2 when trying to find out how many pictures (shutter actuations) my newly purchased refurbished Canon T2i had taken prior to my owning it. In addition to Gphoto2′s many other features which I won’t cover, (look at the man page “man gphoto2″ for all the available features) it has the capability of listing the number of shutter actuation a given camera has on record. Depending on your camera model there may be no way to view this number anywhere else.
