View Full Version : How does one get more involved?

I'm a user of Ubuntu for a few years now, but like all users, and the nature of Linux, I have my pet-grievances and wish lists of nice-to-have features/enhancement etc. Again, I have ideas of my own, that I would like to translate into small apps.

How does one get more involved in the following departments?

1) Suggest a WISH-LIST of features/enhancement to be incorporated in the next versions of Ubuntu.

2) Report and follow up on what one believes are bugs ? Is getting a Launchpad account easy enough? What are your experiences with that ?

3) Contribute code-wise and get your apps accepted into a official PPA? Is there a review system for this ?

4) This may be a slightly naive question, but is there a forum of Cannonical developers kind of thing ?

Thanks,
Dastoor

1. Try http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/.

2. See the bug report howto.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs

3. PPAs are personal package archives. There is nothing official about them.

4. AFAIK, there are only irc and the mailing lists.

Why not give something back to the community by using this forum to give help with those who have problems? Use your knowledge and experience.

Regards.

If you want to get into development or just want to know more about the development process, look into this site

Hi!

My experience with Ubuntu has been so easy and trouble-free that I didn't think I would have much to contribute.

But:

I brag about Ubuntu (Xubuntu, mostly) in my blog (http://robinsrantsandraves.wordpress.com), I've written a few articles on favorite applications, tweaking the Xfce desktop, stuff like that (some in my signature). I keep LiveCDs handy to share with other kids when the opportunity is right (I do not "push" Linux or "evangelize!").

And just today I contributed a little marketing idea to Brainstorm which I think will be really helpful.

That's some stuff that even this little technically-challenged, mildly autistic kid could do! Maybe enough to get me an Ubuntu Membership someday (if I can ever figure out that "signing the CoC" thing, lol).

"Start where you're at," as the saying goes, and use what you've got, and watch it grow!

Helping in my own small way and enjoying it,
Robin
