Hi All,

I recently installed Ubuntu on my Gateway Netbook and and I am very impressed with the package especially having been used to windows over the last 16 years.

I have a small problem with the graphics, the netbook has an ATI Radeon X1270 card installed. Every now and again the screen goes all covered in multi coloured lines and is totally unreadable and the mouse changes to a big box.

The screen seems to clear itself eventually i.e. back to normal or if you are able to see the minimize button do that and bring the screen back up and it is fine, the other option that works is hibernate and start back up.

I have tried downloading the ATI drivers but when hit setup.exe the program comes up with an error (obviously a windows pro-gramme).

I would be grateful if anyone can point me in the right direction of what i am doing wrong or any suggestions on how to fix.
Thanks, Iain

Welcome!

Go to System-Administration-Additional Drivers (or Hardware drivers, forgot)
and check if there is a driver offered for your card.

try adding the edgers PPA: https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa

more info and some help on ATI opensource drivers here.: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RadeonDriver

Edgers is development verison of opensource drivers.

Yes,there is no driver by ATI anymore. They dropped support 2 years ago.

Which Ubuntu version do you run?Have you desktop effects enabled?
