Hi I have been using Julia for a year and it was great until a hd crash and replaced with Katya which has been giving too many problems.
Questions:

If I install Ubuntu 11.04 should it be valid to restore my Katya (gnome 2) home directory?
Why does Ubuntu 11.04 start with Unity on my laptop, but with gnome on my desktop (both same live cd). Tried logout but there is no unity option on the desktop live cd; just gnome options.
I dont know live cd user and root default logins!

Thanks so much for any help.
Alistair.

Both Katya and 11.04 are still based on Gnome 2.32 so if you have your home on a separate partition you won't have any issues mounting it as home and keeping your settings etc...

The reason you might not have an option for Unity on your desktop is that you still need to configure the proper video drivers for it first...

You don't need any passwords on the live CD AFAIK...

If you want to log in and out of the live cd you seem to be required to. I had used root/root and guest/guest but neither worked.
Thanks vm for the info. I will put [solved] on thread.
But if possible, one last question: wanting to preserve Katya grub if possible, and dont have Fdd drive. Is it still possible to backup and restore this grub? I cant find any relevant info about this aspect.
Kind regards,
Alistair.

Thanks vm. I tried off live cd as described below, but that did not work using ubuntu OR mint live cd with error 'grub not found' eg executable grub (not found) so thats out of date or invalid:

Unfortunately, the post saying you could replace user folder with another gnome2 is not quite correct. I get errors after doing this but since I'd closed this thread will bring it up as a separate thread.
