Greetings,

I seem to not be much of a gimp god when it comes to hackergotchi. ](*,) I'm having difficulty getting the shadows to come out correctly. It might be because of the pictures I'm using but I'd rather just chaulk it up to inexperience. I've tried to use the resources linked off of wikipedia and they got me most of the way there.

In any event, I need a hackergotchi mug for launchpad and a few planets. Is there anyone in our community who does this for free or for a small fee?

Thanks,

Joey

wtf is a hackergotchi??:? ... *googles for it* ...oh, an avatar, why didn't you just say so.

In Gimp when you have the object on a transperant background you have 3 different options for adding shadow to it under "Script-Fu -> Shadow -> ...".

Just post your pic and I'm sure someone will do it for you. I don't understand what problems you are having with the drop-shadows. Most hackergotchis use the default (8 by 8 offset, I think)

Here:

Intelligent scissors with a feather of 15, copy, paste as new and then drop-shadow.

Howdy,

Thanks for the replies. :-)

If you don't mind, I want to ask more questions. It's the 'teach a man to fish' concept. :-)

When I use the intelligent select and I have the outline of my headshot completed, for some reason COPY doesn't copy the selection but rather the image (global buffer). Previously it worked but I'm not certain why it's not now. It appears to be a complete loop. I had already seen the video and was using that method and not the scissors (ie. the video method worked, but the scissor I was unable to copy as Azz suggested).

The drop-shadow using the video method is where I would always have difficulty.

I've been using this pic....but have tried others as well. I usually take the pictures so it's not often that I have a picture taken of me that's of any decent quality.

I'm very computer literate so it's embarrasing to reveal my troubles with gimp. Thanks for going easy on me.

When you complete your loop by clicking on your first point again, before the selected zone becomes selectable, you have the option of moving your points around. To make the zone selectable, you need to click in the zone itself once.

See the two images of how the loop is complete, but the zone is not selected yet:

Azz,

Excellent. That's exactly what is happening. It appears the loop is complete but it's not. I'm going to attempt this again when I get back from the LUG tonight. Thanks!

Bored you did that entirely way to fast for me to catch all of it.

Excellent. So the repeated clicking of the first dot was the trick to get it to fully link. Now I just need a better picture!

Thanks Azz!

Are there any standard dimensions for HG? It appears to me that the quality of the gimp'ing is directly determined by the quality of the picture, both the actual shot as well as the physical resolution.

This was a nicer picture but lower res for instance.
