mounting mixed content CD

So this guy brought a CD full of crap (audio, picture, documents) and wanted to view the content. Ubuntu mounted it but said it was a blank CD. I think Ubuntu has some problems handling CD with mixed contents based on googling, I found some several years old bug reports and threads, but they either get closed without answers or just died because no one cares to respond.

I am wondering if there has been any progress on this.

I think the old bugs about mixed content CD's are more to do with those weird cases where someone has made a CD that is half audio CD and half data CD. Having a bunch of different file types (including audio) on a data CD is not the same thing, and shouldn't really cause any problems. It's likely that the CD didn't burn right.
