When I upgraded ubuntu 10.10 (using update-manager -d) and rebooted, i got a blank screen and coudln't go further, but when I did a fresh new clean install of 11.04 from the 11.04 live CD, it all worked fine.

What could be the problem? Going forward can I at all upgrade entire distros using update-manager -d ??

thanks,
Dinshaw

A clean install is much easier (from the developers point of view). There are no packages to replace, no version mismatches, etc. The recommended way for stability is to install your home directory on a separate partition and do clean installs whenever you want to upgrade.

So did I and I would expect many other people. There are also rather significant differences between 10.10 and 11.04 that would make the upgrade more difficult.
