I think the first Ubuntu distro I used was the fastest and arguably the best - 6.06 Dapper.

Only the last four on this list are actually supported (and 11.10 not released until October so redundant for most and certainly not 'fastest and best working' at this point).

You should perhaps have posted this as a poll ... ;)

Well for me Lucid Lynx 10.04, works like charm!

10.10 has been the fastest followed by,
9.10
9.04
10.04 and 11.04 (about a tie)

While I placed them in the order I think was fastest on my machine. They are very fast and made the default install of Windows XP look like a turtle. 10.04/11.04 boot at about the same speed as Windows 7 Pro on this machine, yet they open applications a little faster than W7P.

9.04 detected my audio harware perfectly & allowed 6 channel audio without any tweaking. None before or after 9.04 did.#-o

4.10 - Warty Warthog - Really primitive compared to other OSes at the time.
5.04 - Hoary Hedgehog - Really primitive compared to other OSes at the time.
5.10 - Breezy Badger - Really primitive compared to other OSes at the time.
6.06 - Dapper Drake LTS - Seemed okay, I didn't use it for very long though.
Feisty Fawn - 7.04 - Didn't ever use it.
Gutsy Gibbon - 7.10 - Didn't ever use it.
Hardy Heron - 8.04 - Worked fairly well as long as you were careful with hardware.
Intrepid Ibex - 8.10 - Didn't ever use it.
Jaunty Jackalope - 9.04 - Same as 8.04. I had some power management problems.
Karmic Koala - 9.10 - Awful. Horrible sound problems and booting issues from what I remember.
Lucid Lynx - 10.04 - Would not even boot on my PC.
Maverick Meerkat - 10.10 - See 10.04
Natty Narwhal - 11.04 - Horrible
Oneiric Ocelot - 11.10 - ???

It always seems like the best version for me is the Beta or +1 release, as the current version usually never has wireless working for my netbooks.

Jaunty was the last good Ubuntu release, in my opinion.

Stand off between 10.10 and 11.04 . 10.04 is the only release of the four that I tried that I had minor problems with and it was the slowest on my hardware .

Definitely 10.10- Maverick was a rock for me. 11.04 is close, but ive had some issues. 6.10 was the bane of my existence btw (though I had so many problems it taught me alot [i was a noob]).

For me Lucid Lynx and Maverick Meerkat are the clear winners.

Hardy was the best ever. Period. Ibex was OK, the 9.xx series sucked royally, 10.04 was stable, but needy and bloated compared to hardy. 10.10 sucked on the desktop, runs excellently on the server. 11.04 I've only shortly used, but unity is a step backwards and after 11.04, I kinda quit following new ubuntu releases.

11,04 because i don't have to fix much.
just get restricted extras and switch Java.
don,t know why they give me icetea Java plugging that doesn't work.
and always make me adjust the sound switches.sorry got carried away :)
the answer is 11.04
and another thing why do i have to go to software sources and put checks in the boxes
of canonical partners.then i get the real Java.

Ubuntu 11.04. As for Xubuntu, 11.04... they have done a lot of work to slim it out, and will be even better in 10.10.

I'm pretty happy with the current 11.04 natty release. It's definitely the fastest release of Ubuntu I've used to date. And I've helped the situation along by highly configuring the whole system and ripping the absolute guts out of it to only have a base system and things that I want/use.

To me 10.04 is pretty fast and stable compare to 11.04. Sometime I am a bit tempted to go back to 10.04 but I hate to re install all those programs and do all the updates.

If you asked me a month ago I would have said 10.10. Now I am not sure as 11.04 is shaping up very well and is actually faster and smoother even though I still think Unity needs polish. I am quite happy with this because the new should work better than the old, that is progress! However I am just too lazy to update the OS and I have got better things to do. I will still wait til around Xmas then update to 11.10.

Jaunty was the last good Ubuntu release, in my opinion.

I will not say others after are not good but 9.04 was certainly my favourite. Fastest booting time as well.

My 10.10 boots in 15s. I don't think it can be beaten. :)

I might see if I can find a 9.04 image and see how fast it comes up on virtualbox compared to Debian 6. (just an unscientific test with bootchart) It was a great release.

The best release is always the next one!

Yep, I've stolen this sentence from Enzo Ferrari, when asked which is his favourite racing car:
"The best car is always the next one"

Anyway I'm fond of Feisty because it was my first Ubuntu distro after years of Mandrake and Suse.

9.10 - It worked awesome on my old Toshiba laptop.
10.04 - Didn't use it much.
10.10 - Just plain awesome.
11.04 - Just as awesome as 10.10 except now suspend works :)
