Can you explain what the screenshot shows, e.g. is this the start of the liveCD or the splash screen after installation?

What did you use in order to make your flash drive bootable?

My advice, try Ubuntu in "Live" mode (no change to your computer) for a while before you try to install.

You are trying to install "into" Windows?? You would install on a separate partition (preferably extfs) or replace Windows completely. It sounds like you are trying to install / write linux to an NTFS drive ....

I had the same problem originally with the 10.04 netbook remix version but using ubuntu 11.04 had no problems. This is a wild guess but perhaps Ubuntu is too "intense" for your laptop, and maybe you should try the less resource intensive "Xubuntu". I hear it works better on older PCs. Only difference is that it doesn't use the GNOME unity GUI.

I think.
