I have lost my desktop panels and icons after doing a big update on Ubuntu 11.4

I only have a desktop picture.

As a option I entered in the terminal command: sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop

After pressing enter it asked for my password but it won't let me type it in?????

So is the desktop installed and running in the back ground and is that why I can't type in my password??

Hi, the password does not show in the terminal so you type it and it enter after you type the command you want to use.

Have a look at this link it may fix your problem.
