I recently purchased a Dell L502x laptop and my original goal was to get 11.04 installed on it. However in the course of trying that, I've discovered that my computer refuses to allow virtually every kind of linux installed on it.

Here are the things I've tried, as best I can remember.

11.04 64bit from CD -Kernel Panic the first time and getting stuck on assorted (I think) black loading screens every time since.

11.04 64bit from USB - stuck on a black loading screen with just the blinking cursor

11.04 64bit alternate install CD - (the text based, non-live CD version) - fails to install, gets stuck on the black loading screen.

10.04 64bit USB - shows the initial Ubuntu loading screen, then gets stuck on a black loading screen every time.

Puppy Linux - fails to boot and skips to Windows boot (I think)

FreeDOS - boots successfully

Damn Small Linux - Boots successfully

11.04 64bit Wubi - installs perfectly (but I'd really like a proper installation)

Usually the caps lock light is blinking sadly while the system hangs on the black loading screen.

Sorry for the ugly formatting, but here is the system configuration according to Dell. I'll try to find a nicer list later today.

While waiting for someone who really knows their stuff (I don't) have you tried a 32 bit version? I've found the 32 bit version works fine on my Dell 64 bit.

Just a thought.

Here's a shortened dxdiag output, hope it helps. I know the computer also has Nvidia optimus, which doesn't seem to be showing the main graphics card in dxdiag for some reason? Anyway, it's an Nvidia Geforce GT 540M.
