Hello,

I turned on my computer this morning and the message comes up on the screen:

[ 0.862011] Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS Unable to mount root fs on unkno
un-block(0,0)

In addition to that, my Caps Lock and Scroll Lock lights (on my keyboard) are blinking simultaneously. I can not seem to get past this no matter what I try. Pressing the computer's power button to power off, waiting a bit, then pressing the power button to restart leads me back to the same screen.

Before this screen, the boot menu comes up. If there is anything I can do there, I am thinking, this may be my only hope.

I am running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on my IBM ThinkCentre MT-M 8215-MUB. The operating system was installed about a year ago over the entire hard drive and has been working fine, including up to last evening when I was using the computer. I have not added any new hardware or downloaded anything new that I am aware of.

Any suggestions on how I can get things working again and recover some files on the hard drive? I want to avoid re-installing the OS if possible.

THANK YOU! :)
