I'm not sure how much time mine takes, but I get the felling that it's getting slower.
When I do a fresh install I'll post the results.

Cheers

Boot time is mostly going to be down to how fast your disk is, and how well optimised the software is. CPU will have a fairly minimal effect.

About 15 seconds from GRUB to X, I'm not sure how long from power-on to GRUB, but it can't be much longer than 10 seconds or so.

Both my Arch and Windows 7 installations boot fast enough for me to turn it on and have it ready after I start the coffee maker. I really don't think boot speed matters.

I do autologins on both desktop and netbook - and both machines have SSD boot drives -

Netbook (29 seconds grub to desktop) is an Atom N270 with 2GB RAM and a 60GB OCZ Agility 2 running 32-bit Kubuntu 11.04.

Desktop PC (24 seconds grub to desktop) is a mildly overclocked Core i7-920 (3.2GHz) with 6GB RAM and a 64GB Corsair Extreme X64 running 64-bit Kubuntu 11.04.

No offence, but that is a brutal start-up time, especially for a machine with 4GB of memory. Are you running a first gen P4 or something?

My desktop boots in about 20-30 seconds running Mint 11. The machine is a quad core with 6GB of ram. I think the bottle neck here is the hard drive.

My netbook boots in about 8-10 seconds running Lubuntu 11.04. The netbook has an SSD.

No I use a 32 bit system. So I effectively have only 3gb and I run a a lot of start-up programs.however yes i have an old hard disk with 5400 rpm.But a minute of boot time is not much that I mind as I boot mine only once a day generally.

I installed Fedora 15 the other day, and it booted in about 3.5 seconds.

I have a dual core with 1.8 Ghz per core, 2 GB of RAM, and an integrated Intel HD GPU. There's a lot to be said for supported hardware.

You know, Canonical spent a lot of time and effort (and money) on getting upstart into good shape, but systemd's approach is providing much better results even at such an 'early' stage in development.

I know there are more important things than boot times when it comes to an init system, but from what I've read, systemd is a solid design and doesn't have any obvious drawbacks.

I have three Ubuntu installs. One is an Ubuntu minimal install with Xfce desktop. That gets me from hitting return to choose that kernel from the boot menu to the login screen in around 12-14 seconds. Once I login it gets me to the desktop virtually instantaneously! (Maybe a second and a half or so.)

Not your average install but for the purpose of this thread ...

Toshiba Satellite Pro L510, 4Gb RAM, i3.

4 year old laptop with 1.73 GHz dual core Intel processor, 3.6 GB RAM, 7200 RPM ATA hard disk, and running Ubuntu 10.04.2 32-bit.

According to Bootchart, that is available in the repos, it boots in 19.6 seconds.

I started using home computers in the late 1970's and early 1980's. I can definitely live with 19 or 20 seconds boot times. I remember the days of turning on the computer, going to the lavatory, getting a beer out of the refrigerator, smoking a cigarette, and getting back to the computer about the time it got to a user interface. That was about 20 times as long as it takes my laptop to boot today. :)
