So I'm running Ubuntu server 11.04 on my htpc with XBMC installed on it but I'm having some issues. Mainly the picture is over scanned even in the terminal. I'm not sure if I'm using the correct language but what I mean is that 4-5 letters are not being displayed by my monitor on the left side. I've tried using settings on the monitor but I can't find any options to fix it so I guess my only other option is to fix it through ubuntu. The only problem there is that whenever I try running a command to try and look at the monitor settings I keep getting "Unable to open display" error. So as of right now my only solution seems to be install Ubuntu Desktop 11.04, properly set up the monitor so there's no over-scan and then try to scale back the installation to just the necessary stuff. I'd rather not have to do this but I can't think of any other options. Would this work?
