11.04 installation nightmare

Tried to install ubuntu 11.04 on windows xp with 250GB HD.

during installation process the program told me that there was no existing O/S. did I want to do my whole drive in ubuntu, which I do not , but side by side.

also the program says that my 250GB HD is 137.4GB

What do I do?????

What size does your computer's bios report for the size of the hard drive?
Some bioses can't see past the 137GB mark in a disc and need a bios update or a setting changing. The setting can be called "large drive" or LBA, or something else.
While you are in your bios have a look around for such an option.

Does your XP installation use the whole hard drive or is there free space on the disc (outside of a partition - not inside it)?
