View Full Version : Most Energy-Efficient Distro

My 11.04 Xubuntu install is eating up my battery time. However, I've read that this has to do with the Kernel rather than the distro.

For those few occasions where I really need longer battery life, any advice? I'm willing to dedicate one partition to an older Distro or alternate Distro, just something to use while I'm on the road. Would it be more efficient to run puppy or Lubuntu on a USB key?

I get 6h (of work, not video & entertainment) on my EEE PC 1001PX which runs Lubuntu.

You'll just have to give it a try and see for yourself.

EDIT: Running an OS from a USB drive will probably not give you more hours since it has to be powered. What about a login session with a CLI?

You could try WattOS (http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=wattos).

It mostly just depends on your kernel version. Any differences in power consumption between distros that are using the same kernel should be negligible.

Nice find. I wonder if it does what they say about energy efficiency.

You'll want Fuduntu, or just adding the Jupiter applet to Xubuntu. Have to get it via ppa.

Thanks for the suggestions.

On CLI vs. GUI - I am motivating myself to write a first novel. All I need is a word processor. I don't need a connection, or video or entertainment.

On WATTOS. A while back the creator of the distro was asked what made it energy-efficient. He replied it was primarily Lubuntu, paring down unnecessary tasks and Granola. I'm game to try it again if it's the most efficient.

On GRANOLA. It may be unavailable? LinApp (http://lin-app.com/category/utilities/granola) lists it as $7.99. There also appears to be a free version? - but the link seems broken. Edit: Nevermind, I found it here (http://grano.la/software/download_granola.php).

Haven't heard of the Jupiter Applet. I'll check it out.
