First, (if you can) upgrade to 11.04. I think there's a command that does the whole thing for you, but I don't know/remember it.

What is it mainly used for? I might be able to drum up an iptables script to at least help protect the machine.

Remember, no one can really guarantee that you won't ever get hacked. But that doesn't mean we have to make it easy on the hackers does it?

1 no one is interested in your mail or "hacking" your computer
2 do you use your computer for work, and that needs to be private:
use encryption (cryptkeeper/truecrypt
3 for a laptop and travel with it (work/private things) use the alternate cd for full harddisk encryption
4 email: use https connections, gmail comes with https.(strong passwords)
5 use thunderbird with master password protection on laptops (work)
6 sudo ufw enable in the terminal

don't forget nr 1! :)

enjoy Ubuntu and relax
