Hello

Since I got Ubuntu, I have been using the classic panel, but yesterday I updated my graphics driver, and now I got an entirely new panel. At first it seemed a lot like the old one, but I can't edit the applications on it, its position or its size.
I know its possible to keep using the old one by selecting classic at login screen, I just wanted to know if there is any way to edit it the way I want.

Thanks in advance :)

Welcome to the forums!

You are using Natty (11.04), which uses Unity - A whole new desktop experience, introduced to this version of Ubuntu.

AFAIK ... and this is mostly my opinion ... The panel cannot be moved, [close, minimize, menu] buttons cannot be moved from right back to left (where me and some other users want them), the menu is hiding (blah! ...) on the left (and only there) you have a docky like command bar (I like docky, but this ... no comment)...

... well ...

Your fully fledged desktop computer just became a netbook!!!

In short, If you like the older look better, use classic ... but be aware, that with Oneiric (11.10) its toast ... classic desktop is not going to be there any more (words from Mr. Shuttleworth, the founder himself)

Do not uninstall the driver ;) use it in classic mode :)

EDIT! (added): Note, that Gnome shell 3.0 (http://gnome3.org/) looks suspiciously similar to Unity (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHzP7mxRFJE) ... also you might want to take a sneak preview of Windows 8 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p92QfWOw88I) check it out ... this is where our computers are going ...
And please ;) its a joy :) look at all three video places :) who is copying whom?

There are some modifications you can make . Install the Compiz CCSM , open it up and locate the Unity plug-in . From the Unity plug-in find settings for icon size , auto-hide , back- lighting , and more .

Please some one can help with a howto install Gnome3 without risk of breakdown the system or crashes!! for normal ubuntu ex windows users.

The reason:till now for me as Ubuntu normal ex-windows user, without administrator skills, the unity was the worst modification, I started with ubuntu with 5.10... I'll use Gnome3 anyway with 11.10
Thank you for your fantastic work!!

:popcorn:Hi, there is no way to ensure that gnome3 will not break unity, it happens a lot, from what I have read gnome3 is a lot like unity. What I did was make the left launcher in unity stay hidden and added awn launcher to my desktop. I put yet another applet on my awn dock and it has the menu just like gnome2 so I never open dash, here is a screenshot.

fonsi2099, obviously, this is off-topic, but if you really want to give Gnome 3 a try, see this how-to:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1742343

And yes, it will definitely break Unity, as it is not compatible with Gnome 3.

Greetings.
