View Full Version : How do you pronounce "Xfce"?

I wondered about this for a while. I contemplated the pronunciation "X-force" because it sounds cool and kinda right. I also considered "X-face" because as a DE it is a face of an underlying system. Then I read the wiki (http://wiki.xfce.org/faq) and found out that it's actually pronounced "Ex-Eff-See-Ee". While I understand the reasoning, it just doesn't sound right. It's a little cumbersome. Since the origional name WAS "XForms Common Environment", would anyone object if I use the "X-force" pronunciation denoting it's "XFORms Common Environment" beginnings?

Ecks eff see eee.

This. I usually pronounce every letter in an acronym, like Gee Ehn You. Dunno why.

I only pronounce every letter in an acronym when it's not easy to pronounce otherwise or if it's not commonly used/proper. I pronounced GNU as "new", I believe that's the correct way too, not sure. URL is easy to pronounce but I still pronounce every letter but some don't. The one thing I hate is when people pronounce GUI as a "gouey". Just the sound of that makes me shiver. its a Gee You Ai!

How do you pronounce "Xfce"?

"X face", but I never say it out loud so it doesn't matter.

I like X-Force. At the risk of looking like a "tard" as Bandit put it, I think I might start using X-Force. Or at least in my head, probably not brave enough to try it in public.

But I pronounce it Ex Eff See Ee.

It does seem like a lot of letters to spell out loud(4) but after you consider it's just one step beyond KDE it's okay :)

For some reason, and at the risk of starting another thread, I do say "Ell-Ex-Dee-Eee" when referring to LXDE. I guess it just has a flow to it even if it is 4 syllables...
I have been tempted in saying Lux-Dee-Eee....as in the luxury of more free resources...

I'm a butcher of standard abbreviations...LOL;)

Atleast its not nearly as irritating as when people pronounce Gnome as "Gee-Nome" or "Gah-Nome". Its like nails on a chalkboard for me. I'm pretty sure the G is silent. As in Gnome. The little fantasy creatures with big feet. Which is why they get the feet logo.

This. For me, the g is always silent. I guess it comes from reading too many fantasy novels.
