[wubi] Problem With Installation [Archive]

Okay, I just got a new laptop and I've never had ubuntu but really like it and want to install it via wubi. The problem is, when I go to install it the window pops up and it lets me go through the whole choose size and username etc, i click Ubuntu Netbook for the environment.
Then I click install. It goes really fast but then the "time remaining" bar is at about halfway when the Ubuntu Netbook Installer pops up with "An error occurred: Cannot download the metalink and therefore the ISO For more information, please see the log file: c:\users\jaden\appdata\local\temp\wubi-11.04-rev211.log"
Then I click okay and the installer closes.
I tried going to the file, and i go to c:>jaden> and then there's no "appdata" or anything, so I have no clue what to do or how to fix it. I tried just going through the whole process again, tried saving the file first then setting up from there, and no matter what the same thing happend. I really want to get this problem fixed and the ubuntu set up as soon as possible, I've searched the problem and found nothing. Any replies/help is much appreciated, thanks.

The folder might be hidden. Click the Start button and select "run...". In the window, that apears, enter the file location (yours: c:\users\jaden\appdata\local\temp\wubi-11.04-rev211.log) This should open notepad.

Copy and paste the contents of that file in a [code][/code ] section (the "#" button in the forum)

I read in another post there's not a netbook edition for the latest version that wubi downloads, even though the edition is offered. could that be the problem?

I'm not a wubi expert, but so it seems, it seems it is trying to download something. have you selected the already downloaded ISO or did you just choose a distribution from the dropdown?

Sorry, I really don't know wubi, I'm just guessing here :}

But the error report will surely help someone, who is a wubi expert...

Okay, I just got a new laptop and I've never had ubuntu but really like it and want to install it via wubi. The problem is, when I go to install it the window pops up and it lets me go through the whole choose size and username etc, i click Ubuntu Netbook for the environment.
Then I click install. It goes really fast but then the "time remaining" bar is at about halfway when the Ubuntu Netbook Installer pops up with "An error occurred: Cannot download the metalink and therefore the ISO For more information, please see the log file: c:\users\jaden\appdata\local\temp\wubi-11.04-rev211.log"
Then I click okay and the installer closes.
I tried going to the file, and i go to c:>jaden> and then there's no "appdata" or anything, so I have no clue what to do or how to fix it. I tried just going through the whole process again, tried saving the file first then setting up from there, and no matter what the same thing happend. I really want to get this problem fixed and the ubuntu set up as soon as possible, I've searched the problem and found nothing. Any replies/help is much appreciated, thanks.

Why wubi? It's only for testing and if you really like ubuntu your only limiting your ability. Why not dual boot? That way windows will have it's own partition and ubuntu will have it's own.

You need to download the DESKTOP CD ISO of the appropriate version. Place the ISO in the same folder where you have wubi.exe and then run Wubi. For example, Wubi 11.04 requires the 11.04 DESKTOP ISO, available here (http://releases.ubuntu.com/11.04/).
Note that you need a DESKTOP CD ISO. A DVD ISO may not work. Alternate ISO files are not supported.

As stated, there is no netbook edition anymore. Ubuntu now comes with the Unity interface (that was previously only on netbook).
It's a bug that Wubi offers it.

So just select Ubuntu.

Why wubi? It's only for testing and if you really like ubuntu your only limiting your ability. Why not dual boot? That way windows will have it's own partition and ubuntu will have it's own.

Dual booting....I really don't know too much about it, I looked into it but here are the issues--if you can, please feel free to provide some insight, it would be greatly appreciated.

-if i boot into ubuntu, can i access the files that i have already saved on windows from there? (i'm running windows 7, btw)

-vise versa--can i access the ubuntu files from windows?

-if i did this i would want to make ubuntu my main os, so how many GBs would i need as far as partitioning?

-how on earth do i partition?

I have a lot more, but those are my main concerns.

Wubi is a good way to try out Ubuntu without 'committing' to the whole partitioning business. It's better to do a proper install, but there's no rush... Wubi will give you a very close experience to the real thing.

Since you don't have a dvd/cd drive you can create an Ubuntu USB, following instructions here: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download (Step 2, click on USB, then click on Show me how).

To partition - since you are using Windows7 - you can shrink the main windows partition using the "Disk Management" tool. Note that this only works if you haven't already used 4 primary partitions. If Windows pompts you to create Dynamic partitions, do not allow it (unsupported by ubuntu).

Then you can either let the installer install into the free space you created, or manually create partitions for Ubuntu (I prefer this).

It's easier to uninstall wubi, but not complex to uninstall a regular install:
Wubi - go to "Add or remove programs" in control panel.
Regular - boot from windows repair USB and replace bootloader (from a repair prompt, run "bootrec.exe /fixmbr"); then delete ubuntu partition from Windows disk management and reuse space. It's a bit of a pain creating a windows repair USB - windows only allows you to create a repair CD - but there are guides on the internet on how to do this (I've done it before).

Yes, you can access any ntfs partitions from Ubuntu. From the windows side, there are some tools that you can use to view files on an ext4 partition e.g. http://ext2read.blogspot.com/ (this can also view the virtual disk (root.disk) Wubi uses). But my recommendation would be to have a separate data ntfs partition to store data if you want to access it from both Ubuntu and Windows.

I don't know how much space you should take for Ubuntu - it really depends on how you will be using it. But for my usage 20-30GB is sufficient. I keep my large multimedia files on ntfs.

Some people recommend a separate / (root) partition and /home. I don't bother - that's up to you. If you keep regular backups then it doesn't really matter too much which method you choose.

PS since it's a new laptop, make sure you take a full backup to USB so you can restore it to it's factory settings. (Most laptops don't come with the windows install disks)

My main thing is that I have A LOT of music and quite a few pictures too. Right now they're temporarily on a house pc until I get this new one settled and then I'll put everything back on it. Where would you suggest I put the files when I o put them on? I don't know how separate partitions work.

Any partitioning carries a little risk. Installing 10.10 (non-wubi) has a few confusing bits if you let it automatically partition. Yeah that works. If you don't need special permissions on them. (Even if you do you can refer to this (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1604251))

I wouldn't go less than 100GB for windows (maybe more depending on what you are going to be doing with it). Create an extended partition in the space you make, and then you can setup pretty much any number of logical partitions i.e. more ntfs partitions as well as ones for linux.

Really this has to be a decision you make based on your needs.

Did you clone or at least backup your windows partition. A clone would be better should something go wrong and is much easier to restore over a complete Microsoft install.

I'm not doing 11.04 only because there's an unresolved issue with it so that when I plug in my laptop charger ubuntu crashes, it's a known issue with my laptop but apparently the issue only occurs in 11.04, it doesnt crash in 10.10 (I have a dell inspiron duo)

windows has an option to create a restore image... Plug in a USB stick that is big enough - 8 or 16GB - you might need a bigger one if you've made lots of changes.
Click Start, enter "restore", select "Backup and restore" from above, click on "Create a system image".

EDIT: some manufacturers might supply a tool to create a USB factory restore. e.g. Toshiba has a "Recovery media creator".

I've heard of some clone software like clonezilla. The only clone I've used is "dd" (linux tool to do a block level partition copy). But this uses more space. The important thing is to be able to restore the factory installed OS (plus drivers) you paid for when you bought the computer. The data/programs can always be backed up and reinstalled separately - so personally I didn't bother cloning windows.
