Hello,

I'm not sure where to begin. I just built a new HTPC
MSI 880GM-e41 (on board video ATI Radeon HD 4250 with HDMI out)
4GB ram, AMD tri-core proc (don't have model number offhand)

Clean install on a fresh drive. Tried to install the newest ubuntu first, but I couldn't install xbmc on that version. Retried with 10.04 64 bit. Initially had some issues installing video drivers, but I was able to download them from AMD's site and install them via command line.

I was able to set up ssh and xbmc on my 10.04 install. I did a apt-get upgrade as well, so something may not be playing nicely there.

After rebooting once, I was not able to see past the purple splash screen, but I am able to ssh in. I am not able to access any of the F1 F2 etc consoles. I've tried restarting X to no avail. Nothing I do seems to affect the splash.

From my googling I'm having trouble finding my seemingly unique situation, and therefore a solution. I apologize if I missed something in search somewhere.

Any suggestions?
