How do you recommend keeping an old laptop cool?

What do you use, if anything?

how wide is your laptop?

I keep my laptop on an all-aluminum cooling plate, on top of a right sized cutting board (to ensure air flow). it has a very significant effect on my temps when doing cpu intensive tasks.
I do use the frequency control, but I have it set to adapt as needed.

Depends. If it's a mobile pentium 4... you're not going to get it much cooler than it is. If it's, say, a turion, underclocking can do wonders.

Take off the back cover and clean out the fans and the vents with compressed air. Makes a huge difference. There's lots of videos on Youtube showing how to do it.

I have a turion, I'd like to underclock it but the CPU scaling applet doesn't allow any lower than what it was to begin with.

I also saw this fan: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B001HNOLBI/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_3?pf_rd_p=103612307&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B0037258ZK&pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_r=0G1YP93XV1BTHMJD10YY

Fewt's Jupiter applet (http://www.jupiterapplet.org/) is designed for power saving, but it does wonders for heat reduction too. You should try it.

look for somthing with an all metal chasis if you can. it will aid heat dissipation. also try to find one that you can get into, so you can replace the fans if needed.

I'll look into that Jupiter thing.
opened the laptop up today, actually had to take the entire thing to bits to get to the fan and heatsink, absolute mission.
When I did reach it there was merely one tiny dust bunny behind the heatsink, and a load of hair and crap you don't imagine ever getting in there.
All nice and clean now, though I don't get to test it till I get that power cable fixed too now :c
