Antone know what this is used for in linux or windows machines?

Firewall has blocked about 6 tries for this service. Googleing doesn't offer any understandable info.

This little tid bit came from another forum .

A machine on the network is advertising it runs, or looks for machines running, Compaq Insight Manager on TCP/2301. If the machine isn't yours or you haven't enabled Compaq's web-based remote management then silently drop it.

Now all i have is a dsl connection no network as i understand a network. I do not even own a Compaq computer. Why would a network be advertising itself on the www ? And there are at least 10 of these attempts or " looks ". How to tell if from same machine or network ?

The internet is a network, you've pretty well answered your own question. It is more than likely someone on your sub-net that has a misconfigured computer/firewall.
