View Full Version : Where can I find . . . ??

I'm wondering if there is somewhere a guy can look at and possibly purchase server components to make your own build. Same way someone does with a desktop unit by going to newegg or tiger direct or something. The price is right there in black and white. The components are right there with all the detailed specs for you to observe. Easy peasy.

Now I want to look at that, not for end user desktops, but for like enterprise class servers. Not where you have to call some company and have them give you a quote and they build you a quarter millon dollar server farm. That's kinda hard when you don't know what you need, and you don't need a quarter millon dollar setup, right? But if I can find "the newegg of enterprise class server components" I can learn a lot just from that - expecially the learning that can be had from things that begin with a $ sign.

So, for example, Where can I go and look at 8 socket mobos. Just the mobo. 100 of em' all lined up next to each other and the price right there in bold for the whole world to see. How bout the same for an Opteron 8380? Or for ram that comes in 16 GB stick?

Does anyone have a link for something like that?

I'd sure appreciate it.

hardware does not denote a server, the services running on it do...?

Server hardware is the same as desktop hardware very often, maybe more memory or raid configurations certiainly and in U form factors.

no matter what you build, if it not providing server services then it is not a server ?

you can buy 16gb sticks from lots of places...www.crucial.com
you can buy a opteron 8380 in lots of places too...http://www.superwarehouse.com/AMD_Third_Generation_Opteron_8380_2.5_GHz_Processo r/OS8380WAL4DGIWOF/p/1548261

google is your friend ;-)

Cool. I think I understand that about a server being the software. Sorry I was kinda ambiguous in my orig post. But what if you want to home build a machine that's a little more than your average desktop? So I've been googling for a few hours now - not just about that but about a few things. I never really got to looking for the processor or the memory specifically. It's when I try to find a mobo with more the one or two sockets. What I get is a bunch of immoral garbage that says "8 socket motherboard" in the headline but when you click on it what you get is the same ol' humdrum you'd see in an end user desktop.

'm talking about the real, serious, hard core stuff :D Maybe if I follow your lead by going straight to the manufacturer's web site I'd do ok. In my exper though, the manufacturer web sites never just give you the price. Most of the time they don't even sell the stuff themselves. They refer you to some distributor and then your right back to square one. Talking to some salesman on the phone about something you needed to see comparisons of first before you even know what you're talking about.

There is hardware specifically designed for servers, Supermicro (http://www.supermicro.com/index.cfm) and Tyan (http://www.tyan.com/). also you have to watch what components you buy, as some WD hard drives will not work well in a raid array.

Really?! That's the kind of stuff that's always nice to learn.
