I attempted to upgrade when 10.10 was first out. The upgrade failed to work and I had no video. I thought that trying the live CD first that it would let me know if it would work before I got in over my head :( wrong.

I'm hoping that what ever happened has been fixed I have a lot of work in this computer and don't want to start all over again. Last time I cleaned my hard drive and lost everything.

I'm a little more experienced now with the Linux OS and using the terminal.

anyone willing to help me through this?

The problem was ? Have solved it and if not what happening currently . You wrote that at one point you cleared the hard drive . Are you now ready to do a clean installation of 10.10 or did you reinstall 10.04 and are now trying another upgrade ?

I tried a clean install of 10.10 with the same failed results.
then I re installed 10.04 LTS
I have found out the failed install was related to GeForce 8300 GS and the Nvidia driver.
