I started installing Ubuntu from a CD. It got as far as ascertaining the time zone, and then started copying files, without asking me where to put them. Programs with a mind of their own are not well appreciated by me; especially when it comes to something as hairy as installing an operating system.

They are just being extracted to the RAM, so that the installation process goes faster once you created your partitions. They won't be on your HDD.
