It's a Whale.

My wife deals with washed up cetaceans for a living, and that was my first thought. Things get nasty pretty quickly floating around dead in the sea. I've seen pictures from animals she's had wash up looking pretty similar.

Her job is a lot less romantic than people assume it is.

What kind of a dumb article is that? Did any of the journalists bother ask a marine biologist what could this be?

Basically they had a picture of something strange looking half decomposed thing, they put a label "sea monster" and leave room for the "comments" of uneducated people (and when it comes to sea creatures, most of us are uneducated).

Of course not. Journalism is dead. All we have now is tabloids selling sensational nonsense.

When they hear it has to do with stranded whales and dolphins they go all misty-eyed and think it's about saving them, not cataloguing and dissecting disgusting rotten carcasses.

TBF, they do very occasionally get one that's alive and can be rescued. But generally they're either dead or very close to it when they wash up.

The term "caught" might be a bit of a misnomer. I wouldn't want to be downwind of that thing. My guess is a whale of some kind, but its gonna be difficult to tell which kind due to the advanced stage of decomposition. :-&

1. Doesn't look like anything special. Just looks like a giant fish. It looks NOTHING like a dinosaur.

It should have just eaten whales and sharks by the dozen....maybe then it would have survived for longer.

2. I thought you were talking about the Lockness monster. Sorry, but this fish is a 55 foot disappointment.

They already have a price tag put on it. Another few days and they'll be selling bootleg sea monsters.

Not to mention all articles published a crappy picture, so no nobody can figure out it's a whale.

Three marine biology experts — Scott Baker of Oregon State University Marine Mammal Institute, Bill Perrin, from the National Marine Fisheries Service, and Bob Brownell, from the National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration's Fisheries Service – were all shown photographs of the creature by Live Science.

Their conclusion is that, based on its throat grooves, the creature is a whale.

Is it just me or is pretty much everything he posts either sensationalist or poorly researched?

It helps to research yourself sometimes, especially to verify the authenticity of a news article.

Thanks for the link.

It looked like a whale to me, but I was going to give them the benefit of the doubt. I expected some biologist would come up and say "it is oceanicus-uglicus from the family mutanticus, basically a rare creature that we have known about for 300 years ...." Turns out it is not even a rare thing, just a plain boring whale.

The so called "journalists" spreading this is the real embarrassment to nature.

Or it could be inside an invisible mother spaceship. Remember the humpback whales in Star Trek IV?

^^^This.

The only thing the Sun is good for is the contents of page 3. As for the Mail this is my new favourite Firefox addon...
