Has anyone actually been able to install the Canon Asia driver to operate a Pixma MX870 printer? In lieu of this, is anyone using a generic driver successfully?

Not explicitly, but I did have a cannon scanner I used the Asian drivers on a few years back when using Ubuntu 8.04. Since then my scaner has worked by default without having to explore foreign drivers. But I do remember it...
I also remember the generic drivers weren't feature-full at all.
