I recently attempted to upgrade files in 11.04 but they didn't complete. When I rebooted my computer, it got hung up on "checking battery state... [OK]." I tried troubleshooting based on info in all of the threads that mention this problem, but nothing helped. Now, sometimes when I reboot, it gives me the "checking battery state" message, but other times it hangs up on other messages, e.g.,
*Enabling additional executable binary formats binfmt-support [OK]
*Starting CUPS printing spooler/server [OK]
*Starting anac(h)ronistic cron [OK]
*Stopping anac(h)ronistic cron [OK]
[OK]

Sometimes it just displays one of the first two lines, and other times it just displays the last line (blank line with "[OK]" at the end).

I'm still learning linux, so I'm not sure what other information is necessary to help diagnose this problem aside from this:

Are you able to boot into recovery mode?

Yes, I tried to boot into recovery mode and was able to do so without a problem.

Ok, try to connect your computer to the internet (it would be best to use a lan cable) and try it

ping google.com

If you get a reply, just press CTRL+C to quit.

Then you can try to upgrade everything:

apt-get update
apt-get upgrade

I believe you are already root, if not, you should put sudo in front of the command.

If you get an error, please report it here (you can take a pic).

I tried to boot again into recovery mode, and I wasn't able to. There is a pic attached of what showed up.

I ran updates successfully and received no errors, but I still have the original problem when I try to boot normally.

So you can't boot to recovery either? Than I think you will have to do a complete reinstall. You can save your files and settings by copying your /home directory, but you will have to reinstall your programs.

Okay, I managed to get it to boot in recovery mode again. (Still learning new things, sorry.)
Still, though -- after running updates/upgrades, I continue to have the same problem...

Do you have nVidia Drivers or Noveau drivers on your distro ?
