We share great-grandparents. So we are second cousins. Then my mother's cousin would be my cousin once removed I suppose.

That chart makes it a lot easier. This whole time I've had it backwards! Thanks

If you are into genealogy then the gramps (http://gramps-project.org/) program will let you know how two people are related. However you have to enter all the data first.

That's useful. I think everyone is interested in their own genealogy to some extent. I have an aunt who did a family tree for my paternal side. It focused on the details and histories of their lives. It's very interesting. Finding out how and why some people died was somewhere between interesting and shocking.

For instance, my great-grandfather hanged himself in jail. All it said in my aunt's documentation was that he was in jail for something having to do with women. I don't know if it was prostitutes, rape or what but something made him commit suicide.

It could have been the guilt. He had been treated for syphilis but never told his wife. She never knew she had it until she went blind.

Years later, she died in a fire. She was probably taking something out of the stove and it caught her clothes on fire.
