I had to finally give up Unity because my little netbook was running so slow. However, I loved the global menu because it freed some valuable screen space.

In classic, I can't figure out how to get the close/max/min/title into the panel/global menu like it is default in Unity. Is there a way?

My screen shot below is the best I've come up with...

Thanks,
A

There is a global menu PPA for 10.10 . I think it has not been updated because the global menu is included with Unity . That may be a starting point , I'm not sure if the Unity packages will work with the gnome panel.

Yeah, that's what I'm looking for but there's nothing that is updated for 11.04.

For anyone who cares or wants to do this, I figured out how to make this work. See the screenshot below for how it looks.

Step One: Add the appmenu and main menu applet. Right-clicking on the panel -> add to panel.

Step Two: Add window buttons applet. http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Window+Applets?content=103732
[Note: you might have to log out and log back in before you can add the applet to the panel.]

Step Three: Remove the menu bar when maximized. http://www.webupd8.org/2009/11/gain-space-by-removing-maximized.html

Seems to be faster than Unity without giving up to much aesthetically. Cheers.

Thank you. This worked perfectly on 11.04. Much obliged.
