i think you can hover over it and use the middle scroll on your mouse

I am not sure about the 5536, but I have an aspire 5535 laptop, and the volume buttons above the keyboard also control the volume in ubuntu

You can have a sound settings in control center.
But, when you click the sound applet on a panel it must present you with a sound bar to set a volume level for you. Doesn't it works for you?

yes the sound bar is there and i have it on full, under the sound bar is system preferences and i used to be able to click on that and i could put the system volume up even further, but as i saiad when i click on system preferences now it takes me to control centre instead of system volume control ?
thank you.
