View Full Version : [ubuntu] Lucid 10.04. ATI video Card Driver Update

I am working on my first linux PC. I have been building Windows PCs since 2003 ish, and have a (networking) tech job. Throwing out my tech level up front so people know where I am coming from.

As stated, I am working on a new PC, and am having trouble with the ATI video card drivers. The goal of this project is to build an HTPC using XBMC. I currently have Lucid installed, and it runs fine. The hitch in my plans comes when I install XBMC. First I need to upgrade my video drivers from the free ones to the catalyst ones. (Video Card (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161367)) Everytime I think I have completed the process, I get the following error "(ee)radeon(0) acceleration initialization failed".

I am not averse to reformatting the PC if I mess anything up, and thats actually how I have been starting from scratch a few times. Wipe everything, reinstall OS, and start over on video drivers.

The end goal is to get XBMC playing and running, so if anyone knows a better OS to use, or better method that is easier in the end than dealing with the video drivers I am also open to that.

I have read the offical XBMC guides (http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Lucid_Installation_Guide) for doing this, but I am still hitting errors.
