Jun 6 16:24:51 q kernel: [1801127.170122] usb 2-5: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 23

That's the only line that shows up in my syslog when I connect it.

I have the same ipod and issue. This is the only things I see when I plug it in:

Have you installed gtkpod or another ipod management utility?

Yes, though I think the ipod should at least mount without installing anything extra.

Progress though, I tried connecting without a USB extension cable and am now getting an error!

Unable to mount touchypod: DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus)

At least I have something to Google now.

Last I checked, which was a couple of years ago, it's not incredibly easy to mount an iPod. Since it's Apple's proprietary device, I don't know if they've made an effort to develop for Linux (probably not).

The iFuse module for fuse might help you out in that regard, but that looks like it's still experimental.

Here's the description:

"iFuse is a FUSE filesystem driver which uses libiphone to connect to iPhone
and iPod Touch devices without needing to "jailbreak" them."

If you've already set up iFuse and attempted to mount without success, then I'd troubleshoot the USB device. You could also try filing a bug report for iFuse if none of that works.

Update: Here's the Ubuntu iPod page (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PortableDevices/iPhone). It looks like mounting is supported through iFuse. So, if you've tried manually mounting the iPod or added it to your /etc/fstab and that's not working, you should file a bug report.

Update 2: Actually, it looks like your error could be related to this thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1628529).
