I need help correctly setting up my xorg.conf file so that

my laptop screen has 1900x1280 (native resolution)
and my second monitor has 1600x1080

After browsing the forums and messing around with drivers I managed to get the resolution up to 1600x1080 (from 1000x800 at install) on the laptop screen. No luck at all with the second monitor. I currently have it connected with both VGA and DVI.

my understanding is I need to use twin view to setup the second monitor. I've read several of the earlier posts but haven't been able to get it to work. Here is my current xorg.conf file:

I've made some more progress.

I copied someone elses xorg.conf file that had a somewhat similar setup and had some success.

With this xorg.conf file I managed to

1) get the second monitor working

But, it overlapped with the first in a strange way

2) get the laptop monitor resolution up around 1900x1200

But again, the overlap

3) and the orientation is backwards. I've read you can fix this with the use of "right of" and left of" but was unable to get this to work despite following another tread to mimic

4) and the huge drawback is I lost both the top and bottom taskbars


I think one of the reasons this worked is because of the "nvidia auto select" part but i'm not sure how to fix the problems I've encountered.

You don't need anything in the modules section.
The nvidia driver will load all required extensions.

You need to be sure what the wired ports are called. You are using DVI & VGA but referring to (2) DVI/HDMI displays in the xorg.conf.

You can use twinview or separate X screens.
Twinview makes a meta-mode screen & pans the screen margins to make a virtual rectangle.

If you post your
/var/log/Xorg.0.log
file as an attachment it will reveal the wired port names & any other errors.

Have you run
nvidia-settings
GUI app ?

I have run the nvidia settings gui. The highest available resolution I can get that way is like 1200x800. I got 1600x1200 by increasing the horizontal sync and VertRefersh values in my xorg.conf file. And neither that gui or the monitors gui recognize the second monitor, even after hitting detect monitors.

I am trying to setup my build in laptop monitor and an external monitor ( which can be connected by either VGA or DVI whichever is more convienent)

From your Xorg.0.log file:
Seem to be using a very new kernel..
You are not using the nvidia driver. Looks to me that the VESA driver is taking over..
- no twinview
- no video modes above 1024

Better to connect with DVI...this seems to cause less EDID read problems.

Try to install any later nvidia driver via synaptic package manager & NOT jockey (additional hardware drivers).

Getting the nvidia driver loaded is the first priority.

yes I have run nvidia-settings before.

When I initially installed ubuntu 11.04 on this computer I had a tremendous amount of difficulty and tried a great many different paths to get it to work so my memory is a little hazy on exactly what I did. I tried several different distros and different versions of the distros and they all failed. Eventually I got 11.04 to work. Unity didn't work, which I found was common. So after more effort spent in safe mode I finally got ubuntu to boot into the gui at 800x600 resolution. I was prompted to choose an nvidia driver.

At the time I choose the one labeled most recent (confusing b/c it didn't actually give a version number).

There were three options:
nvidia 170something
free driver
nvidia most recent

I believe I tried all the options and I just left it when I got my resolution increase to 1600x1200. Judging from the output of the xorg.0.log file this was probably achieved with the free driver.

I have used synamptic to installed the nvidia driver 185 ( which I am assuming is the latest b/c its the highest number..) I also used synamptic to remove jockey. Upon reboot my resolution is 800x600. To check if the nvidia driver is being used I ran nvidia-settings and it says that the nvidia driver is not being used and that I should run nvidia-xconfig as root to fix this. The result of running this in a terminal is:

I still think the driver is not loading..

If I suggest another ppa, for the nvidia driver, to be add to synaptic package manager would you know how to use it ?

My 11.04 box is running nvidia 270 on a 9400GT no problem..but this was an upgrade from 10.10 & 10.04..

Well now you are running/trying to run the nvidia 270 or at least version 270 nvidia-settings

If the X server GUI fails to load you can do a console login..

Hit <ctrl><alt><F1> & then enter user & password..

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log > xlog.txt

You can backup/delete /etc/X11/xorg.conf file to get back to step one.(one screen working)
Try running
sudo nvidia-xconfig

Post the xlog.txt file...

Things to try find out:
Don't use xinerama..
The xorg.conf file has confused/incorrect device busid... post output from lspci | grep VGA
The user defined parts of this file may have moved to sub folder /xorg.conf.d/
Blacklists.. do you have a file in /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-graphics-drivers.conf ?
This file is a link to a real file..does this file have blacklist nouveau in it ?

Now that Xorg.0.log shows the nvidia 173 driver loading okay...
The likely problem is a messed/mixed package components..of 173 & 270.

The PCI busid "PCI:3:00:0" in case needed later..both device sections have the same BUSID.

I would purge the nvidia drivers & start again..
sudo apt-get --purge remove nvidia-*

then reboot

sudo apt-get install nvidia-current
nvidia-xconfig
reboot or logout/login GUI (gnome)
nvidia-settings

You should not need to specify any horiz or vert freq ranges..
But don't set the vertical frequency as 60 as the real rate is 59.97 ..try 58 - 62 maybe..

this yields the same.

laptop 1920x1200. Then I was able to change the nvidia settings and get the second monitor setup as a seperate X screen.

now it only I can get my two taskbars back. :)

From the log file..

nvidia 270 seems to have loaded okay..
Both monitors are correctly identified (I think)

Run nvidia-settings from the desktop
check your settings, check any scaling or overscan settings & save to xorg.conf.

I have not come across twin GPU video cards before..don't know what is right or wrong.
How do you take advantage ? (rhetorical)

Does the display pan/scroll as you move the mouse pointer to the screen margins ?
Do any gnome menus appear with keyboard shortcuts ?

got my panels (taskbars) back via http://netgator.blogspot.com/2010/06/taskbar-missing-in-ubuntu-1004.html

specifically these commands to confirm gnome-panel was installed:

gconftool --recursive-unset /apps/panel
rm -rf ~/.gconf/apps/panel
pkill gnome-panel

Then re-adding gnome-panel to startup programs. :)

everything looks good. but I've noticed a few problems. Can't drag windows to the second monitor. Hotkeys don't work on second monitor. for example ctrl+alt+t doesn't open a terminal. If I open firefox on the second monitor I can't open firefox on the first one b/c "firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system". And programs opened in the second monitor I can't move around. they also don't have the minimize/maximize/close buttons.

not sure I understand any of your questions. hahaha.

For the time being I don't care if both monitors are running off of one video card. I don't think the load is too serious.

the advantage of two cards is for gaming. with them in a sli configuration they provide better graphics for the single laptop screen then one card alone. But the only game I play these days is starcraft and thats on windows, so I don't really care if there is no advantage to them under linux. I just want to use my second monitor and have the resolutions right. :D

nothing happens when I move my mouse pointer to the screen margins. I am able to freely move my mouse from my laptop screen to the second monitor.

To be able to drag between monitors you need to use twinview.
Twinview uses a meta-mode & must have common refresh rate.
Separate X screens makes sense for full screen video/HTPC apps like MythTV/XBMC.
Don't try xinerama..
I haven't had any menu/applet problems since 8.10..no help from me. I remember having to delete the panel applet config files.

So you have two separate graphics cards...I assumed a laptop couldn't..
Linux does support SLI & I understand the benefits.

To launch an app on to 2nd screen when using separate X screens...

export DISPLAY=:0.1 && vlc

glxinfo
glxgears
vdpauinfo
to check your openGL & vdpau video decode..

what are the pros and cons of twinview vs a second X screen?

what about moving stuff around on the second window? or keyboard shortcuts?

its an alienware laptop so it might not follow normal conventions. It also might be possible that the two cards are inside one? idk. I bought this computer way back when sli first came out and haven't really kept up with the gpu wars since then.

another problem:
I am unable to type in any terminal that I open in the second monitor.

Linux nvidia twinview is not as nice as windows version.
The linux flavour pans & scans with mouse at virtual margins...you need to try before you buy..

Twinview use a meta-mode the size of a virtual rectangle that include both screens.
i.e. 1680x1200 (4:3) & a 1920x1080 (crap 16:9) would become a (1680+1920) x 1200..

The extra (1200-1080) on screen 2 becomes virtual pan & scan.

Twinview forces same refresh rate on both...could be bad for full screen video outside NTSC land.
No openGL or vdpau performance losses.
Can drag between screens & have icons on 2nd screen.

Xinerama has no openGL & consigned to history AFAIK.

Separate X screen you have now but the keyboard should work on both..
Independent refresh & vsync-2-blank.
No dragging or icons on 2nd screen. Menus work fine.
