Run System -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers and install your gfx card (nvidia/ati) and reboot, it should go straight into Unity, failing that select it from the session box during log-on...

Run Additional Drivers to see if any graphics card drivers are available for your card. If so install them and reboot. Unity may be waiting for you when you get back :-)

I suspect that your hardware is just not good enough, though you don't say what graphics card you have. I have a machine with a Sempron 2400+, 2GB ram, 160GB HDD, but an ATI 9200SE card which will not run unity even though it can, and still does, run compiz perfectly in 10.04.
