View Full Version : 64-bit on a pentium D?

I'm going to be reinstalling arch in a bit after reformatting my whole HDD, and I was wondering if I should go 64-bit. I've already done 64-bit linux on a Turion laptop and the experience was good. But I've heard bad things about 64-bit performance on the Pentium D. Can't afford to upgrade to a core 2- rather save up for my AMD Bulldozer build (whenever it comes out). Should I stick with 32-bit?

I am not sure about your specific CPU, but my rule has always been if you have a 64-bit CPU, run a 64-bit OS.

I have a Pentium D computer that runs 64 bit just fine.

Dont use 32 bit. Its old school and stupid. :P

Go 64-bit!

If you have any doubts see this current thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1783026

Why? Cause my upgrade cycle will probably still have me using it when 2038 rolls around? ;)
And for the record, It's just that I remember hearing reports a few years ago that Pentium D's performance with 64-bit was less than half that of 32-bit due to poor chip design. I know 64-bit is ready, I just don't know if my computer is ready for 64-bit.

I wouldn't go 64 on Pentium D, I think there are some issues with some Pentium CPUs not being fully 64-bit. The standard is called AMD64 because AMD came with it first (on Athlon 64), everything AMD like Athlon X2 and newer is 100% 64-bit. For Intel you need to get Core 2 Duo or Pentium Dual-Core.

Pentium D may work, but I doubt it. You can test though, use a liveCD/USB.

AMD64 instruction set went live in 2003, the Pentium D was released in 2005 with the very same AMD64 instruction set.
It will be fine.

Did no one read that I have a pentium D and it works just fine with Ubuntu 64? lol

I guess personal experience doesn't count any more!

I'm going to "burn" an arch install usb, install it and give it a go. I'll post back when I have it installed and with a GUI, probably about 2 hours since I've got to do backups and stuff.

No people prefer to regurgitate fables they heard long ago :D

I use 64-bit on a Pentium D 9xx and it works great.

This is the first time I hear anyone using 64-bit on Pentium D.

Good to know that it works.

Took my a little longer than I expected to get it up and running, mainly because of a 5 hour power outage (thanks, power monopoly...). But it's running nice and smooth. I feel like some geek unboxing a gifted Athlon 64 in 2003! Pentium D 820 (I think) by the way, if anyone cares to know.
