Dear Ubuntu community,
We recently bought a brand-new Toshiba laptop that had an advertised hard drive capacity of 320 GB. Instead, we got 280 GB.

If the laptop with 320 GB comes to $360 all in all, how much do you think is a fair price for a laptop with all specs the same except for a 280 GB laptop.

Here is why I asked: The e-tailer first offered me a partial refund of $25 to make up for shipping me a 280 GB laptop when I ordered a 320 gb laptop. But the customer service agent said that if I find that the $25 is not a fair offer, they can consider either offering a bigger refund (or a smaller one if I complain of their generosity!). So, my info-tech friends, what would you say is a fair value for a partial refund? $25? $80?

When you answer with a dollar figure, please support your answer: Why did you say $X?

UPDATE: To be specific, Win7 says "286 GB" in the "Computer" folder.

How can I find out the exact details/specs of the hard drive inside my new laptop, while in Win7 OS?

To be honest with you. I know better that is actual 320 GB hard drive. I'm betting there is some hidden partition on there in case you need to do a complete system restore! They are probably holding about 20 to 40 gb in reserve for hidden drivers and bloatware. I'd use some partition program to find those to verify it!!

I would load up a Live CD and use the ubuntu/kubuntu partition editor to verify it!!

In Windows just type disk management:

Thanks for that tip. In Disk Management program, I see three rows:
Here's the information listed in the capacity column:
1.46 GB
10.31 GB
286.31 GB

This adds up to 298.08 GB, still about 20 GB short than the advertised capacity.

You have to understand that they don't always tell you the truth when you have a 320 you really only have around 300. See this comment:

hanzj,

I think you have just run into the difference between a gigabyte and a gibibyte: http://www.ehow.com/info_8371289_difference-between-gibibyte-gigabyte.html and: http://www.arteki.com/do-you-know-your-gigabytes-from-your-gibibytes/ .
