I know this has been discussed before, but I cannot find anything that actually helps me for some reason. I have renamed the mysqld.cnf file, I have followed all kinds of tutorials, but for some reason.. none of them solve the problem. I keep getting

neganx@sledgehammer:/usr/bin$ ./mysqladmin ping
./mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2)'
Check that mysqld is running and that the socket: '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' exists!
neganx@sledgehammer:/usr/bin$

and I have no idea why

I uninstalled and reinstalled... all kinds of things...
help!!
thanks in advance

followed http://linux.about.com/od/nwb_guide/a/gdenwb01t88.htm

and a few others, any help would be awesome

And did you? You don't say so in your post.

oh sorry, in my frustration I didn't include that, the mysql.sock is missing and I cannot, for the life of me find any way to replace it.. I may just not be looking in the right places, but I tried everything from every thread in every forum I could find with a google search for mysqld.sock missing
